Canceling your University Housing Contract

Visit the Housing Forms page to download cancellation paperwork. All cancellations must be in writing and can be received via e-mail, fax, or mail. Requests by phone to cancel a contract are not considered a valid cancellation and will not be accepted. If in doubt, contact the Central Housing Office via phone at (618) 650-3931 or e-mail, housing@siue.edu.

The eight approved reasons to cancel your Housing contract during the contract period are:

  • Graduation at the end of the Fall term (submit request by December 1st deadline to be eligible for cancellation fee waiver)
  • Marriage (copy of certificate required)
  • Serious Illness (Doctor's statement & University Physician verification required)
  • Death in the immediate family (documentation required)
  • Counseling considerations (documentation required); please print out the following information on guidelines for a counseling consideration cancellation request.
  • Active military induction (copy of orders required)
  • Withdrawal from SIUE for the remainder of the University Housing contract period
  • Academic Suspension (copy of suspension letter within two weeks of date of letter is required - if deadline is met, student only forfeits $75.00 security deposit and is not responsible for a cancellation fee)

All approved reasons require the appropriate paperwork.

Cancellation Request during the Contract Period

  • For the cancellation request to be approved, it must meet one of the eight approved reasons listed above. If the cancellation request meets one of the eight approved reasons, the cancellation request will be approved. If you cancel prior to December 1, there will be a $250.00 cancellation fee and Housing charges will be pro-rated through the end of the week that the student properly checks out. If you cancel after December 1 and prior to the first day of University Housing move in for spring, you will be responsible for a $300 cancellation fee and pro-rated charges.
  • If it is an approved cancellation, schedule a check-out appointment with your Resident Assistant at least 24 hours in advance of the desired check-out day & time. Failure to properly check-out will result in additional penalties.
  • Once you have properly checked out the $75.00 security deposit will be credited to your student account. If you do not have an outstanding balance with the University, a refund check will be generated and mailed to you.
  • If the cancellation request does not meet one of the eight approved reasons, the cancellation request will be denied. The student will still be responsible for the remainder of the University Housing contract, regardless if the student lives there or not.

Cancellation Request Prior to Moving In

Canceling for the Fall Term

  • If canceling prior to May 1st, submit a written request to the Central Housing Office requesting to cancel your Housing contract. Excluding the $25.00 non-refundable application fee from the $300.00 payment, the student account will be credited $275.00.
  • If canceling after May 1st but prior to August 1st, submit a written request to the Central Housing Office requesting to cancel your Housing contract. The entire $300.00 payment will be forfeited.
  • If canceling August 1st but prior to the first day of University Housing move-in for the Fall term, you must meet one of the eight approved reasons for canceling. If you do meet one of the eight reasons, the $200.00 advance payment and $75.00 security deposit will be forfeited. If the cancellation request does not meet one of the eight approved reasons, the cancellation request will be denied.

Canceling for the Spring Term

  • If canceling prior to December 1st, submit a written request to the Central Housing Office requesting to cancel your Housing contract. Excluding the $25.00 non-refundable application fee from the $300.00 payment, the student account will be credited $275.00
  • If canceling after December 1st but prior to the first day of University Housing move-in for the Spring term, submit a written request to the Central Housing Office requesting to cancel your Housing contract. The entire $300.00 payment will be forfeited.

Canceling for the Summer Term

  • If canceling prior to the Friday before the first day of University Housing move-in for the Summer term, submit a written request to the Central Housing Office requesting to cancel your Housing contract. Excluding the $25.00 non-refundable application fee from the $300.00 payment, the student account will be credited $275.00.
  • If canceling on or after the first day of University Housing move-in for the Summer term, all cancellations will be denied. The student will still be responsible for the entire summer contract charges, regardless if the student lives there or not.
