2:00pm Metcalf Theater
(No admission charge. Seating is limited.)
Join us in the Metcalf Theater for “Heavy Like the Weight of a Flame,” a one-man play from Brooklyn native and SIUE alumnus R. Ernie Silva ’99. This serio-comic autobiographical story follows Ernie as he leaves home in search of liberation from past tragedies, including the deaths of close friends and an older brother he idolized. Fearful of becoming another casualty of the street, Ernie grabs his guitar and a few belongings and hits the road, riding freight trains and encountering the harsh reality that life in the rest of America is not that much different than Brooklyn.
“Heavy Like the Weight of a Flame” has enjoyed international success as an official selection of the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival under the production of the Greenwich Theater in London. It has also enjoyed runs at the Greenwich Theater and the Contact Theater in Manchester England. In 2010 the show enjoyed several accolades including winning NYC’s The ONE Festival 2010, the HOLA Award for “Best Solo Performance” 2010, and the nomination by the LA Weekly Theater Awards for “Best Solo Performance” in 2010. The play is written by James Gabriel and R. Ernie Silva.
“Silva’s ability to wrap the universal into the individual, the cultural into the communal, is brilliant.” -The Huffington Post
“Watching R. Ernie Silva in his autobiographical ‘Heavy Like the Weight of a Flame” is like listening to exquisite poetry, music both classical and jazz all wrapped in the true life experience of the urban jungles of New York.” -LA Times Website Reader’s Review
“Never mind the fact that Silva’s musical abilities are mesmerizing. (He) leaves you hanging on his every word, every muscle and every strum of his guitar for the entire 70 minutes.” – USC Daily Trojan
