Wilma Schmitz is a 1981 graduate from the School of Education. She chose SIUE because she wanted to be away from home yet close enough to go home when needed. "On a visit to the campus, I fell in love with the openness." During her time at SIUE, she was: the Vice President for Building Review of the University Center Board; a member of the University Center Renovation committee; served as Winterfest Chair and Springfest Chair; a member of the Tower Lake Commons Opening Committee, University Committee for MRF planning, and University Ambassadors; a student driver for artists during the Mississippi River Festival-student worker; Advertising Manager for the Alestle; and one of the first African American women to join the national fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi (Business Fraternity).
After graduation, Wilma received her masters in Gerontology from Lindenwood College. She is married to Stephen Schmitz and has two children, Christopher and Nikole Hobbies. She enjoys growing orchids and bonsai in her free time. Wilma was interested in joining the Homecoming committee because, "I enjoy working with the Alumni Association and enjoying reconnecting with other alumni." Her favorite SIUE memory is making lifelong friends, Springfield and Winterfest activities and working with MRF entertainers.
