II. Minutes of April 27, 2012

There was a redundant sentence I the first paragraph under II (Minutes). The sentence was removed.

Nick Guehlstorf made a motion to accept the minutes as amended; Ken Witt seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

III. Form 91A: Psychology (SOE-12-806)

The graduate program wishes to replace one of its electives with a required course, PSYC 584 (Evidence-Based Practices in Autism Spectrum Disorders). This will "address an important public health need of students in Illinois schools affected by ASDs," since the occurrence of ASD is on the rise. Additionally, requiring the course is advisable due to significant upcoming changes to the DSM-V Diagnostic manual regarding the diagnoses of autism disorders. There are no adverse effects on faculty or budget. The requested effective date is Summer of 2013.

Ken Witt made a motion to approve this request; Shrikant Jategaonkar seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

IV. Form 91A: Nursing: Health Care & Nursing Administration (SON-G-12-30)

The graduate programs wish to increase practicum hours and reduce didactic hours, by converting one half credit hour of NURS 590 and 592 to require 45 practicum hours, and convert 1 credit hour into 90 practicum hours for NURS 591. The increased practicum hours will "improve student knowledge and application of advanced nurse administration skills." There was a typo on the HCNA Part-Time Progression sheet. The additional text that should have been part of NURS 592 was erroneously added to NURS 593. There are no adverse effects on faculty or budget. The requested effective date is Spring of 2013.

V. Form 91A: Nursing: Nurse Educator (SON-G-12-31)

The graduate programs wish to increase practicum hours and reduce didactic hours, by converting one credit hour of NURS 582 and 586 to require 90 practicum hours. The increased practicum hours will "improve student knowledge and application of advanced nurse educator skills." There are no adverse effects on faculty or budget. The requested effective date is Spring of 2013.

Allison Thomason made a motion to approve these two requests with the amendment of the HCNA progression sheet; Koung Hee Leem seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

VI. Form 91A: Nursing: Doctor of Nursing Practice (SON-G-12-22)

The professional program wishes to reduce the number of credit hours from 34 to 30 by deleting the course NURS 695b. This will "[streamline] the program, [decrease] confusion over residency versus practicum hours, and [allow] Doctoral project hours" currently assigned to NURS 695c to be "spread equally over final 4 semesters." There are no adverse effects on faculty or budget. The requested effective date is 12/3/12, or Spring of 2013. Committee members expressed concern about the reduction of credit hours in such a new program. How would this compare to other DNP programs?

Ken Witt made a motion to approve this request; Shrikant Jategaonkar seconded. The motion failed with 2 ayes and 5 abstentions.

Ken Witt made a motion to table this request for further clarification on the reduction in credit hours; Shrikant Jategaonkar seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

VII. Form 91A: Special Education/MSEd (SOE-12-803)

The graduate program wishes to increase its credit hour requirements for the Master of Science in Education in the Second Certificate in Special Education (informally known as Learning Behavior Specialist I) from 36 to 39 for candidates who are presently employed as teachers. Students may take up to 6 credit hours of the field study. The additional course is SPE 578 (Advanced Field Study). This will "meet revised national accreditation requirements." There are no adverse effects on faculty or budget. The requested effective date is Summer of 2012. There was a typo under the new program of study: "36" should be changed to "39."

VIII. Form 91A: Special Education/PM (SOE-12-804)

The graduate program wishes to increase its credit hour requirements for the Post Master's Certificate in the Second Certificate in Special Education (informally known as Learning Behavior Specialist I) from 24 to 27 for candidates who are presently employed as teachers. Students may take up to 6 credit hours of the field study. The additional course is SPE 578 (Advanced Field Study). There are no adverse effects on faculty or budget. The requested effective date is Summer of 2012.

Gertrude Pannirselvam made a motion to approve these requests; Emily Truckenbrod seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

IX. Form 91A: Mathematics (CAS-09-256)

The graduate program wishes to clarify the requirements for double majors "consistent with [its] program description and with the Graduate School policy." It specifies that "Six to nine hours of the electives may be waived for students who complete a double major. These students must complete at least 9 hours of 500-level mathematics, statistics, or operations research courses, not counting the thesis or research paper." There are no adverse effects on faculty or budget. The requested effective date is "asap."

Ken Witt made a motion to approve this request; Allison Thomason seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

X. Form 91A: Industrial Engineering (ENR-12-02)

The graduate program wishes to add a research project to the non-thesis option and replace the written exam on course work by an oral exam on the project. The project is '0' credit hours. There are no adverse effects on faculty or budget. The requested effective date is Spring of 2013. Lynn Maurer asked how the request will affect the assessment plan. Xin Chen replied that he didn't know. The program has just submitted a new plan.

Ken Witt made a motion to accept with amendment to the catalog copy; Allison Thomason seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
