Application Deadlines:
For domestic classified status, the deadline is approximately a month before the start of classes (Definite dates are on the application itself). International students, please see the FAQs #16 for your deadline. NOTE: If you are a new graduate student and you intend to apply for a Competitive Graduate Award (CGA), the deadline for having all of your application materials turned in moves up to January 15th. If you apply for the CGA but your SIUE application is incomplete, your application for the Competitive Graduate Award will be removed from consideration.
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers a program leading to the Master of Science in Education (MSEd) degree with a major in curriculum and instruction. Within this program, students are offered a variety of areas of study for Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 educators.
The Master of Science in Education with a major in curriculum and instruction provides practicing teachers with the opportunity to develop deeper and broader understandings of the challenges of teaching and learning in today’s diverse schools. This program draws on the many areas of expertise of the C & I faculty and offers opportunities for learning that can help you grow in your ability to become a leader in your profession.
General requirements for unconditional admission to the graduate program in curriculum and instruction include a bachelor's degree, valid teaching certification or for candidates seeking initial certification passing of the Illinois Basic Skills Test, and a grade point average of 3.0 or above (A=4.0) during the last two years of undergraduate work. An applicant with a grade point average between 2.5 and 2.9 may also be considered for admission.
An applicant who does not meet the department's requirements for admission can appeal to the Department Graduate Admissions and Review Committee and present additional evidence of competence to undertake graduate degree work. Additional evidence may include an interview with the student and/or probationary course work of 9 semester hours of graduate work in which a B average is maintained. The Graduate Admissions and Review Committee's decision is based on all available relevant information.
Ordinarily, candidates for the Master of Science in Education degree with a major in curriculum and instruction will complete a 36-semester hour program of study planned in consultation with an adviser. Each approved program of study has three components:
General professional core (9 hours): EPFR 501, 515, 520 or 521.
Curriculum and instruction core (6 hours)
Early Childhood Emphasis: CI 412, 530; or
Curriculum and Instruction Emphasis: CI 510, 561 or 562.
Area of emphasis (21 hours): Courses selected from curriculum and instruction courses or courses with adviser’s permission.
All candidates must pass a final examination. In consultation with an adviser the candidate will complete one of the following final examinations: action research project, thesis, or written exam.
