Defining Excellence in The Gardens
The Prairie House featuring Illinois Landscapes: $750,000
The Prairie House will immerse visitors in the glory of the iconic landscape of the Midwest. Beyond its remarkable beauty, the Prairie Garden will provide students with a living laboratory in which to study and explore one of the most productive plant communities on earth. The Prairie House will serve as an outdoor classroom as well as be a stunning venue for events and celebrations.
The Prairie House design beautifully expresses and supports the landscape which will surround it. A prairie-style pavilion, it will be built of indigenous materials and cloaked in a green roof of prairie grasses and forbs. The landscape will showcase the inherent beauty and restorative qualities of essential Southwestern Illinois ecosystems.
Landscapes that embrace the Prairie House will be edible, sustainable and delicious. An edible garden will be presented to visitors, exhibited in raised beds as well as ground plots. Fruit trees and shrubs will line the paths.
To the south of the Prairie House, an environmentally-friendly mowed terrace will accommodate a multitude of spontaneous and planned activities. A display garden of prairie-inspired perennials and grasses will surround the terrace and transition to a spectacular, restored prairie. From here, meandering paths will lead visitors through an oak savannah, to the woodland edge and a one-acre wetland.
This zone of The Gardens at SIUE is truly an outdoor laboratory for University students as well as an inspiring destination to all visitors.
