Mission StatementThe mission of The Gardens at SIUE is to create a venue of beauty and distinction that will support the educational and research components of the University; that will engage the public in educational opportunity and campus life; and that will provide a haven for relaxation and enjoyment for all.
1. How much will The Gardens cost?
The projected total cost to build all of the garden features on the master plan is around $30 million. However, this has been broken down into several phases and the goal for the Phase one is $6 million. Phase one includes: The Bloomin’ “e” Terrace, Scholar’s Walk, The Pinnacle, and the Treetop Bridge.
2. Who will fund building The Gardens?
Money will be raised in cooperation with the SIUE Foundation, through private funding sources including donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Contributions to The Gardens may be made through the SIUE Foundation.
3. How does SIUE support THe Gardens?
SIUE provides salary for the director and student workers; budget for maintenance, operations, and equipment; and specific projects. Additionally, many SIUE administrators, faculty, staff, and students have contributed time, talent, and resources to The Gardens.
4. What is the timeline for building The Gardens at SIUE?
Implementing the entire Master Plan will take many years…perhaps 15 – 20, and will produce an exciting public garden for all to enjoy. Phase one will be implemented over the next two to four years.
5. Why are there ribbons on the trees?
The Gardens was recently surveyed and most trees larger than 12 inches diameter were marked on a map. The ribbons identify which trees were surveyed. The next step is to identify the species of tree, create an accession tag for the tree, and produce a map with the name and location of all trees and shrubs within The Gardens. The result will be a collections database that can be used for education, locating donated plants, and fundraising.
