FY2018 Baich Awardee: Dr. Corey Ragsdale
Dr. Corey Ragsdale, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, is the winner of the FY2018 Annette and Henry Baich Research Award from the SIUE Graduate School. The Baich Award is given annually to the most outstanding STEP grant proposal for basic research conducted within the parameters of the Sigma Xi Society. Disciplines include the physical sciences, life and medical sciences, earth science, engineering, psychology and mathematics.
Dr. Ragsdale began his career at SIUE after serving as a Visiting Assistant Professor for the University of Montana. He attended California State University San Bernardino to obtain his B.A. in Anthropology, and the University of New Mexico for both his M.S. and Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology.
Dr. Ragsdale’s award-winning proposal, “Biological Consequences of Spanish Colonization in Mexico City,” was chosen from a competitive field of submissions. Ragsdale’s proposal seeks to address the question of how group membership relates to inequality in access to resources, labor distribution, and violence for Colonial Mexico City.
Ragsdale more broadly aims for his project to understand the biological consequences of socio-cultural changes associated with the Spanish colonization of Mexico and the American Southwest. He feels this project will lead to a better understanding of the effects of Spanish colonization on the demography of indigenous populations in North America.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ragsdale on this significant recognition!
