About the Teacher and Musicians

Joseph Kaloyanides Graziosi is a leading authority on Greek music, dance and folklore. Joe was raised in the Greek American Community in Boston, and specialized in Eastern History at Brandeis University. In 1975 Mr. Graziosi conducted dance research in villages in Greece with the noted folklorist Ted Petrides. Since that time he has done extensive independent research in folk music and dance in Greece, the former Greek areas of the Anatolian Peninsula, and the Greek-American communities in New England and New York. An excellent teacher and performer, Joe has taught workshops at the Balkan Music and Dance Camps in Mendocino and Ramblewood, and at every other important folkdance group in North America and Japan. This will be his third workshop in St. Louis.

Beth Cohen plays Greek rural and urban folk music on the violin and on various lyras, and is a member of the Greek folk band Ziyiá. She has studied and performed in Greece, and has performed and recorded with many groups in the U.S. including Sophia Bilides' Greek ensemble Taximi, Christos Govetas and Karavani, Jim Demetrios Tashie, and for ten years Ziyiá. She has taught at the Balkan Music and Dance Camps since 1990. She is of Syrian Jewish and Ukrainian Jewish heritage and also plays Klezmer music with the Klezmer Conservatory Band and others. She has performed and recorded with The EurAsia Ensemble, playing Turkish music on the bowed tanbur, has played Hungarian village music with Sárkány, and has performed and recorded with Libana. She was a Radcliffe Bunting fellow, a recipient of National Endowment of the Arts grants, has performed throughout the world, and has taught classes and workshops at major universities throughout the U.S.

Jim Demetrios Tashie was born and raised in New York and has been in love with Greek music and dance since his early childhood. Taking his first official Greek dance class from Joe Graziosi 13 years ago, he went on to be a dancer and President of the Greek American Folklore Society of Astoria, New York, under the direction of the late Paul Ginis. Being an avid collector of Greek instruments and costumes, he also gives talks on various aspects of Greek folklore. He plays laouto and dahare with Beth Cohen.

To hear examples of the type of dance music that will be featured at this workshop, tune in to the program Music from the Hills on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on radio station KDHX, 88.1 FM in St. Louis (you can also listen online).
