About the Teacher and Band

Dick Crum is one of the foremost authorities on Balkan Dance and the numerous Balkan dance styles. He is the former choreographer and artistic director of both the Duquesne University Tamburitzans and the Aman Folk Ensemble. Dick is famous for his delightful teaching style, his legendary wit, as well as for the breadth of his knowledge of folk dance and folklore. Beginners learn easily from him, and advanced dancers enjoy his teaching style as well.

Dick Crum first went to Yugoslavia to study dance and folklore in the early 1950's. Since then he has taught both the folk dances that he learned while studying in the Balkans and those that he learned from immigrants in the ethnic communities of the United States. Many of these dances are included in the core repertoire of folkdance groups throughout North America. It is a thrill to see him, dance with him, and learn from him. The International Folk Dance Association is very pleased to be able to sponsor his visit.

Becari (pronounced "beh-char-ee") is a six-member tamburitza band from St. Louis, formed in 1974. The members of the Becari band are: Ken Ban on Prim, John Amich on Brac, Mike Katich on Brac, Joe Barry on Celo, Nick Garcia on Bugarija, and Tim Katich on Bass. Most of the band members began playing as part of the Junior Tamburitzans of St. Louis. Becari has played for many local ethnic festivals, church dances, picnics, parties, weddings, and other events. The group has been a featured performer for The Tamburitza Association of America from 1974 to the present and for the American Slavic Association. Its repertoire includes music and songs handed down from the members' grandparents and from other local Tamburitza players.

Tamburitzas are a family of fretted, steel-stringed, plucked acoustic instruments frequently used in playing the music of several countries in southeastern Europe, particularly the South Slavic lands that comprised the former Yugoslavia. For more on the tamburitza family and its history, see What is a Tamburitza and Where Did it Originate? on John Valentich's TamburaWeb site.
