About the Teacher and Dances

Raised in the San Francisco area, Steve Kotansky moved to southern California after high school and danced with the prestigious Aman Folk Ensemble in Los Angeles. Sojourning in Germany for over 7 years, he worked with ethnic communities (guest workers) in Munich, while teaching dance and performing -- and taking advantage of his proximity to Balkan and eastern European countries to pursue his interest in the study and research of their dances. He also lived in Bucovina for awhile, learning local folklore. In the winter of 1979-80, Steve returned to give his first workshops in the U.S. He has since taught at every major North American festival and camp. He is known as a fantastic dancer, and remains in demand as a teacher, due as much to his infectious energy and enthusiasm as to his knowledge. He also serves as a consultant to several Hungarian folk ensembles. This will be his third time teaching in St. Louis.

Dances: Steve has traveled extensively in Romania, especially in Transylvania, and has learned a wide variety of original folk material. We have specifically requested dances that translate easily to Americans but retain their village character and charm. You do not need to bring a partner, as we change partners frequently. (Notes by Rex and Nancy Couture.)

Meals and Other Information

This workshop
is supported
in part by
The Regional Arts Commission of Saint Louis
Shoes: We recommend wearing clean, hard-soled shoes (leather or synthetic), as many couple dances require turning which is more difficult with rubber-soled shoes. Some people find the floors slick and others find them sticky, so you might bring more than one pair of shoes and see which works best. Both locations have wooden floors.

Meals: Meals will feature mostly Romanian food. Please make dinner reservations by November 10. Contributions of fruits and sweets will be appreciated for snacks. Call Nancy Couture at 314-275-8228 for questions about food.

Joan Amsterdam of International Folk Rhythms, Ltd. will be selling ethnic recordings, books, clothing and accessories, and crafts on Friday and Saturday.

Crash Space is available. Please indicate your needs on the registration form, or call Diana Blanchard at 314-726-5737.

Scholarships are available. Please call Gretchen Tomazic at 314-638-4024.

For Other Information: Call Rex Couture (home 314-275-8228, work 314-935-4194, E-mail rex@levee.wustl.edu), or Diana Blanchard (home 314-726-5737, E-mail blanchard@simon.wustl.edu).
