Yuri Yunakov is a Bulgarian Roma (Gypsy) saxophone player known for one of the most popular music styles in the Balkan region that emerged in the early 1970s: Wedding Music. This particular style combines virtuoso technical with fabulous improvisational skills, stunning tempi and unexpected changes of keys. Wedding Music is based on regional Bulgarian folk styles mixed with influences as disparate as Jazz, Rock as well as Arabic, Indian and Rom (Gypsy) music.
Yuri came to the United States in 1994 and founded his ensemble the following year. The Yuri Yunakov Ensemble was formed in the image of a popular wedding band in Bulgaria, Trakiya, in which Yuri had played, headed by the legendary clarinet player Ivo Papasov. In addition to the extrordinary saxophonist Yuri Yunakov himself, the Yuri Yunakov Ensemble includes the renowned Bulgarian accordionist Ivan Milev, and also features Catherine Foster (clarinet, trumpet, vocals), Lauren Brody (keyboard, vocals), Georgi Petrov (drums, vocals) and Carol Silverman (vocals). The musicians in this nationally recognized band come together from all over the country, from New York to Oregon.
