Language Humor

• Clinton Deploys Vowels to Bosnia -- A classic news item which has been widely circulated on the Internet.  This is the original version, which was published by the Onion, America's Finest News Source (Madison, WI) and includes a map of "Operation Vowel Storm".
• Losing Something in Translation -- Signs in foreign countries not-quite-correctly translated into English.  This too has been widely circulated, and appears to originate from an article by Derek Davies in the Far Eastern Economic Review.
• Swedish Idioms in Painfully Literal Translation -- As the collector David Curle puts it, "Aficionados of the Swedish language like to collect idioms and amuse each other by translating them literally."  (Note: For those who like to print first and read later, be warned that this document is about 50 pages long!  There is, however, an "Editor's Choice" at the beginning with links to the top ten idioms.)

• Sundian subVersions -- Titles, sound clips, and ordering information for a CD containing "farfetched facsimiles of folkdance favorites", produced by Bob Schulz (Albany, NY) to document the musical culture of Sundia, a mythical region said to be the spiritual homeland of international folk dancers.
