How does SIUE support your professional growth or activity as a Teacher-Scholar?
"I have received much support from the University since I joined SIUE in 2002, in the form of internal grants for both research and teaching. The grants include Funded University Research, Summer Research Fellowship, Research Equipment and Tools Grant, Excellence in Graduate Education Grant, Excellence in Undergraduate Education Grant, conference travel and publication reprint support, on campus workshops and seminars. This support benefited my professional growth, enhanced my teaching effectiveness, helped me in obtaining external grants and producing scholarly work, and helped to build my professional career at SIUE."

What is a unique aspect of your professional life that enhances your service to the academic or greater community?
"Before I obtained my Ph.D. and joined SIUE, I had worked as a consulting engineer in Canada for more than seven years.  I have been a Professional Engineer (P.E.) since 1994 and a board certified specialist in Water Supply and Wastewater by American Academy of Environmental Engineers since 2004.  I found that my engineering experience obtained from the practice and the industry greatly enhanced my ability to communicate and establish linkages with both the academic and professional communities.  For example, I have acted as a reviewer for journals (e.g., ASCE Journal of Environmental Engineering), technical publications (e.g., USEPA Design Manual for Municipal Wastewater Stabilization Ponds), conferences (e.g., International Water Association, America Society for Engineering Education), and proposals (e.g., US National Science Foundation, North Carolina Biotechnology Center), contributed to the organization of technical conferences, and acted as a committee member or in leadership roles of professional organizations (e.g., secretary of the Residuals Management Technical Committee of Environmental & Water Resources Institute of American Society of Civil Engineers)."

Please share how one mentor or event shaped your career decision to become a university professor.
"An environmental engineer once said that 'A man’s debt to his profession is to help those that follow.'  I share this thought and believe it is my obligation to share what I know with tomorrow’s environmental engineers. This is one of the reasons I left the industry for the university setting after I  worked as a consulting engineer in Canada for more than seven years."
