How does SIUE support your professional growth or activity as a Teacher-Scholar?
"The University has offered many sources of faculty support such as the Excellence in Learning and Teaching Initiative, Office of Assessment, Faculty Technology Center, Office of Grants and Projects, and Graduate Studies and Research.  The recognition and mentoring from Dean Maurer, my chair, Dr. Perry, and fellow faculty members has also been invaluable in shaping my faculty role."

What is a unique aspect of your professional life that enhances your service to the academic or greater community?
"I currently hold a Collaborative Service Agreement with Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL, to provide consultation in research and evidence-based practice.  This role entails a blend of research, teaching, and service to hospital professionals, with the goals of increasing research capacity and achieving Magnet Recognition, a national accreditation initiative for quality health care.  Since July of 2006, Memorial's research competence has unfolded through initiating a Research Council, research and evidence-based practice projects, a Research Website, a Research Day Conference, and receiving a Magnet Recognition evaluation visit in January of 2008.  The collaboration with Memorial has provided a unique perspective on professional service within the context of a local health care system."

Please share how one mentor or event shaped your career decision to become a university professor.
"The relationship with my masters and doctoral program mentor, Dr. Ruth Murray, Professor Emerita at Saint Louis University, has been pivotal in forming my professional identity.  This mentoring relationship has developed through various phases: from supervisor and teacher, to peer and collaborator.  Her guidance changed my perspective of self from that of a clinician to more inclusive ones of researcher, teacher, and mentor to my profession and community.  I am now a co-author of the eighth edition of her textbook, Health Promotion Strategies Through the Life Span."
