How does SIUE support your professional growth or activity as a Teacher-Scholar?
"The primary support has been my colleagues from across campus who have collaborated with me and those who have supported the management of my projects (e.g., Joy Tedford in the Department of Civil Engineering and the Graduate School staff)."

What is a unique aspect of your professional life that enhances your service to the academic or greater community?
"I have been fortunate to have assisted with starting a research initiative at SIUE that examines vegetated roofs and walls – the Green Roof Environmental Evaluation Network (G.R.E.E.N.).  In addition to involving a number of colleagues at SIUE from a range of disciplines, the research includes extensive industry support and student participation.  The results have been widely shared and are frequently requested by individuals and companies who have an interest in green roofs."

Please share how one mentor or event shaped your career decision to become a university professor.
"
My dad is an engineer and taught at the college level (at SIUE, in fact).  He was my introduction to engineering and higher education.  Engineering’s logic appealed to me, and the flexibility of an academic career appealed to me as well, so I went with them.  I’ve learned over time that with the flexibility comes the difficulty of finding and maintaining a balance between work that never ends and the rest of my life."
