How does SIUE support your professional growth or activity as a Teacher-Scholar?
"
SIUE is committed to supporting the development of researchers and teacher/scholars as evidenced by a number of internal mechanisms to support faculty scholarship and to provide funds for seed projects whether for new educational programs or new research initiatives. The Graduate School also has a superb staff that supports faculty research for proposal development, building cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional projects and support for the financial/business aspects of grants and contracts. These resources have supported my professional growth as a scholar as well as my work as a research mentor for other faculty."

What is a unique aspect of your professional life that enhances your service to the academic or greater community?
"Probably the single most important aspect is the degree to which my work and professional relationships cross disciplines and institutions. My research colleagues have been at St. Louis University in nursing, social work, public health, and medicine; at Washington University in medicine and epidemiology; and at the University of Missouri St. Louis in nursing. My focus on vulnerable populations in maternal child health has also led to involvement in projects that support community services to pregnant adolescents, abused children, pregnant undocumented immigrants, homeless mothers and children as well as efforts to prevent and treat substance use among pregnant women."

Please share how one mentor or event shaped your career decision to become a university professor.
"During Master's study at the University of Illinois, my thesis committee included a wonderful young researcher by the name of Alice Dan. I was not interested in research and was doing a thesis because I had no choice. Alice Dan, in a quiet and gentle manner, just kept asking me questions.  Questions about my observations and questions about what I had observed and experienced in my practice as a public health nurse working with teenage mothers. With the lightest touch imaginable she drew me into the literature and further and further into disciplined inquiry until I was hopelessly hooked. She lit a fire that led to many wonderful projects, places and relationships including my latest home, SIUE."
