Description:

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among college students.  One in 10 college students has made a plan for suicide.  As a faculty member, you play a vital role not only in providing our students with an exceptional education, but you also serve as an invaluable role model and mentor.  Navigating college life can be challenging and stressful.  For some students, the demands can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression.  This can have a profound impact on class performance and social development.  As a professor, you may take note of this impact, both inside and outside of the classroom; however, many do not feel equipped or knowledgeable in how to help a struggling student.

In this important faculty development session, participants will walk through several high risk scenarios involving students in emotional distress and exhibiting suicidal thinking.  This training will help you to feel more comfortable and confident in your ability to respond to these difficult situations and will provide you with the needed resources to help our students at SIUE to be well.  This training is a part of our iCARE suicide prevention initiative at SIUE and will be led by Counseling Services, expert faculty, and student advocates.  No prior knowledge of mental health disorders is needed for this training and ALL faculty are encouraged to attend.
