UPDATES FROM FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
Just as the swallows return to Capistrano, the reason for SIUE (a.k.a. students) returns soon for Fall Semester (Move-in is August 19-20.). They will be getting their textbooks, moving into residence halls, and generally adapting to being back to school. As a result, pedestrian traffic may be more congested. Drivers are reminded to be alert for pedestrians. Each and every student is invaluable to SIUE.
AND THE ROOM BELONGS TO…
Classrooms and labs on campus that are locked are assigned to the department responsible for the key for safety or security reasons. FM does NOT lock or unlock these rooms, but it would be a huge help and greatly appreciated (as well as avoid confusion when classes resume), if departments post contact information on these door signs and inform departmental faculty accordingly. FM appreciates the assistance.
Departments are asked to remind students of the difference between Facilities Management and Facilities Management Housing. Facilities Management Housing can be reached at extension 2070 or www.siue.edu/housing. FM appreciates the assistance.
ClipBoard readers are reminded (and asked to remind others) that e-mails to an individual mail box may not be checked while that person is on vacation or away. An e-mail requiring immediate attention should also be copied to firstname.lastname@example.org to ensure a response even if the addressed supervisor is on vacation.
New vestibules on the south and west side of Peck are open! The west vestibule really changes the interior appearance and will enhance the use of the space by greatly reducing cold drafts. Windows in the office area are nearly complete; new piping and window heaters have been installed; winter usage should be much more comfortable. Work will continue on the classroom wings with a completion date expected in mid October. However, all work affecting classrooms will be complete before classes resume.
All of the failed window units have been replaced. One window on the north entry broken during the winter will be replaced as soon as the glass panel arrives, which may be around Labor Day.
Contract negotiations between CDB and the Abatement Consultant have delayed the completion of the bid documents, but the contract is now in place. The bid documents should be ready in November, but actual work won't start until the end of the school year. Once a contract is awarded (which can take 6 weeks), then the contractor has a great deal of paperwork to submit for approved before materials can be ordered. It may appear nothing is happening, but simply preparing for construction is a great deal of work.
Science Lab Building West
Those watching the progress of the construction have observed the first floor framing and floor slabs being poured. The contractor is working on a schedule to complete the construction by the end of March. The electrical, heating, ventilating, plumbing and fire protection contractors have all stated that they have 6 months of work to complete once the building is fully enclosed. Thus, the challenge for the general contractor is to get each floor poured and the exterior walls erected.
Engineering Building Addition
Architects are preparing the contract documents for the University to review prior to going out for bids. The bid date will be established this fall.
Vadalabene Center Addition
Construction contracts have been let and the contractor expects to start work on the site near the end of August. The University has to replace a gas line along Circle Drive just before the contractor starts the site excavation.
Morris University Center
The contractor remodeling Pizza Hut and Taco Bell has worked diligently to complete the renovation earlier than expected. These restaurants won't be open in time for the start of school on August 22nd, but should be finished shortly thereafter - the exact opening date will be set to allow for training in the new facilities and will be announced by MUC.
Art & Design West
Contracts have been issued to contractors and they anticipate starting around the end of August. The parking lot at Art & Design will be closed to the public as the contractors need the space for construction materials and storage. The sidewalk west of Art & Design from Evergreen will be closed by construction; an alternate route will be built to accommodate Evergreen Hall students. Painted striping will mark the route which will lead through the existing building.
The architects are working on the renovation plans for the existing building and expect review documents soon. Bids will be sought later this fall.
A fence is to be erected to separate the engineering students' workshop area from the main portion of the refrigeration plant. A new exit door is also being installed in the north wall as part of the fence project.
A project to replace windows in Rendleman Hall is in the contract document stage and will be bid this fall. Work will begin in the spring. In addition to replacing the windows, two new vestibules will be added to the building to improve heating and cooling in the main lobby and corridors. This will greatly reduce energy consumption in the building, and enhance the comfort of building occupants.
A new hitting facility will begin construction shortly. The building will feature an infield fielding practice area, several pitching practice areas, four hitting cages, and equipment storage space. The plan is to complete the building before Christmas.
Most of the larger projects have been completed. A divider wall is being erected in a laboratory and windows will be replaced in four tract houses. Most of the current projects call for studies: renovation of laboratories in the Science Building, review of needed tuckpointing on all buildings, and window replacement for the last occupied building not updated thus far.
The new STEM classroom renovation is under way. Demolition has been completed and the exposed roof structure painted black. A new glass entry way will be installed along with floating ceiling segments, nifty lighting fixtures, a room to house a special copier that creates 3-D duplicates of objects, and a video wall. This center will be a showpiece for the campus and East St. Louis.
Numerous improvements have occurred throughout the summer to the parking lots, walkways, and grounds. Lot P-11 nearly doubled in size, new walks were added to the fan lots where road and parking lot repairs occurred, Residence Road was rebuilt from Prairie Road to the Woodland main entry, and parking lot lighting was enhanced with better energy efficient lights.
