"Empowering People..... Strengthening Communities"

Executive Director
Patricia Harrison

Consistent with the University’s commitment to public service, the East St. Louis Center provides services to individuals of all ages within its service region.  The SIUE East St. Louis Center operates programs funded through federal, state and local grants. Serving a clientele of more than 6000 annually, the thrust of the Center's operation is its vision of becoming "A nationally recognized service delivery center that offers exemplary service and innovative programs that equip diverse populations for responsible citizenship, productive employment, and economic development in a changing global society".

Services of the Center take the form of programs and activities designed to address a variety of needs identified over the many years of SIUE’s involvement in the affairs of the urban community. Services and activities organized by the Center’s programs include: 1) preparing preschoolers for entry into kindergarten and upcoming primary school years; 2) enhancing the educational success and social well-being of youth and adults;  3) providing the foundation and motivation for youth to pursue and achieve their career aspirations; 4) preparing and encouraging high school graduates to pursue mathematics, science and/or engineering fields of study; 5) co-sponsoring parent involvement activities to enhance the role of parents in the education and development of young children beginning at the preschool level; 6) sponsoring local and nationwide trips for high school youth to visit universities and colleges, and participate in leadership conferences; and 7) sponsoring performing arts productions, showcasing the talents of youth before an audience.

In addressing the varied needs of clientele, East St. Louis Center programs implement non-traditional, innovative strategies and techniques to ensure success.  Computer technology is incorporated into curricular instruction in various disciplines.  Scientific research is carried out to promote hands-on experimentation.  Career shadowing opportunities for high school students are provided for first-hand experience in professions of interest.  On-campus residential components are offered to provide high school students with an early college life experience.

With a focus of “Empowering People…Strengthening Communities”, the SIUE East St. Louis Center’s dedicated and expert staff members have worked selflessly to improve the quality of life for individuals and families, and to generate enthusiasm and empowerment by mobilizing the University’s resources to provide educational opportunities.  The Center has long been an important resource to area citizens.  Its presence symbolizes a positive future for area residents.  Through the Center’s services, individuals are provided with renewed hope and an opportunity to reach their potential and their educational and career goals.
