If you are a new incoming student, you must make an appointment with Academic Counseling & Advising to declare a major. Once you have declared a major in the School of Engineering, Academic Counseling & Advising will send your declaration to Engineering Student Services for evaluation. Once Engineering Student Services completes its evaluation, you will be sent a letter telling you who your advisor is and their contact information, along with a copy of your transfer credit evaluation (if applicable).
If you are currently a student at SIUE and want to change your major to an undergraduate program in the School of Engineering, you must complete a Change of Major/Minor form with Engineering Student Services. An evaluation of your academic records will be done (for your new major) and you will be notified, by letter, of your new academic advisor (if applicable) along with a copy of the evaluation.
As soon as Engineering Student Services receives your declaration from Academic Counseling & Advising, and completes an evaluation for your specific program of study, you will receive a letter from Engineering Student Services telling you who your advisor is, along with a copy of the evaluation. When you receive your letter, please call 618-650-5300 to set up an appointment with your advisor.
Your initial welcome letter you received from the School of Engineering will have your advisor information. However, you can always contact Engineering Student Services at 618-650-5300 to find out who your advisor is.
To change your advisor, you will need to request and receive approval from the Director of Student Services.
Transfer credit decisions for general education courses as well as most freshmen and sophomore-level math, chemistry and physics courses are made by the SIUE Transfer Center. Detailed transfer credit information is available at the following website: http://www.siue.edu/transfer.
You must complete a Change of Major/Minor form located in Engineering Student Services. After the information is processed, the changes will be available on CougarNet.
If you have applied for graduation, you will need to inform the Graduation office of the change. The Graduation office is located in Rendleman Hall, Room 1309.
Computer Science is almost totally oriented toward software development while computer engineering is both hardware and software oriented. A computer engineer must have a significant knowledge of software development in order to be able to design the machines which will run the software.
Computer Science is the only major within the School of Engineering that offers a Bachelor of Arts degree. All engineering degrees are Bachelor of Science degrees. The BS degree requires many more math and science courses and is a much stronger computer science curriculum. The BA degree requires two semesters of foreign language, has nine more free electives and requires a minor in some other discipline.
