SIUE’s Huang Named Outstanding Reviewer by Engineering Society

Jianwei Huang, assistant professor of civil engineering at SIUESouthern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Jianwei Huang, assistant professor of civil engineering, has been named a 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Outstanding Reviewer. The achievement recognizes Huang’s service as a reviewer for the Journal of Bridge Engineering.

“I am proud of my services that allow me to contribute my expertise to the profession,” said Huang. “I feel honored to receive this award.”

SIUE Alum Named President and CEO of Visteon Corporation

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville alum Sachin Lawande has been appointed president and chief executive officer of Visteon Corporation, a leading global automotive supplier, effective June 29. Lawande will also serve on the company’s board of directors.

Lawande earned a master’s in electrical engineering from SIUE in 1992.

CNN Money detailed Lawande’s appointment in a news release posted Wednesday.

SIUE Partners with the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District to Diversify its Workforce

A partnership between Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) aims to diversify the workforce at MSD. MSD is offering scholarships to minority students who receive their training through the SIUE Environmental Resource Training Center (ERTC) Water Quality Control Operations program.

Ryan Fries, associate professor and graduate program director in the SIUE School of EngineeringSouthern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Engineering researchers are receiving national praise for their work to reduce fatalities and injuries involving roadside incident responders through the creation of safety training materials. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has named their project, “Development of a Highway Incident Management Operational and Training Guide: Phase II,” a Sweet 16 High Value Research project for 2015.

Jessica Sorrill, SIUE alum is awarded Engineer of the Year at BoeingJessica Sorrill, a 2010 mechanical engineering alumna of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, was awarded the 2014 Engineer of the Year/Engineering Excellence Award at Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) in St. Louis. Sorrill received the award at a ceremony held during Engineers Week Feb. 23-27.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s engineering building addition has met green building leadership standards which has earned it a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) distinction from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Visitation for School of Engineering student Taylor Clark, who passed away Tuesday, May 5, will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday, May 11, at Richeson Funeral Home, in Troy and from 9-10 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Troy.

Funeral services will follow immediately at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Jerome Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Black Jack.

The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville community is mourning the loss of sophomore School of Engineering student Taylor Clark, who was found dead yesterday in Hazelwood, Mo. Clark had been missing since late Monday morning. The St. Jacob resident was 19.

Soondo Kweon, assistant professor of mechanical engineeringSix mechanical engineering students and two faculty members from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville will travel May 9-18 to Tongmyung University (TU) in Busan, South Korea for a Summer Capstone Design Camp.

Engineering Students Daniel Bugger and Samuel Baker Engineering students from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville took part in a regional conference designed to help students compete in an increasingly demanding world.
