The 2007 Thomas and Elizabeth Anderson Scholarship has been awarded to Mr. Derek B. Bolsen, a senior Mechanical Engineering student. The Anderson Scholarship was established in 2004 by the generous donation of the late Professor Thomas P. Anderson's family for Mechanical Engineering at SIUE. This is the third year an Anderson Scholarship has been given out. The scholarship is to honor an outstanding junior or senior Mechanical Engineering student. The scholarship is under the supervision of SIUE Mechanical Engineering faculty. Currently the scholarship pays tuition of one semester. If the tuition is already paid by other scholarships, the Anderson Scholarship will pay $1,500 cash.
Faculty picked Derek to receive the award based on his outstanding academic performance. Derek started his college education at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, IL where he received an associate degree in science. Since he started SIUE, he was on the Dean's list every semester. He was inducted to the Pi Tau Sigma National Honor Society in the spring of 2007, and was a member of the National Scholars Honor Society. He has been engaged in a research project on vibration testing sponsored by Caterpillar and under the supervision of Professor Albert Luo. He said he had a great experience at SIUE, and felt the school has prepared him very well for his future career in mechanical engineering.
Derek is the older son of two of Daniel and Linda Bolsen of Pawnee, IL. In his spare time, Derek likes hunting, fishing, off-road riding, and enjoys family and friends.
