Student Support

Student PictureFull and partial scholarships can be funded on an annual basis or endowed. These are restricted funds and can be used only for student support. Both kinds of scholarships can be awarded based on need or merit.

In addition to being an important tool in promoting greater student diversity, scholarships can also beawarded to encourage academic excellence or entrance into a specific field of work, such as civil engineering, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering.

Need-based scholarships can make it possible for promising students to pursue a computer science, construction or engineering degree at SIUE. For many students, financial aid is a critical resource, but it can result in a significant amount of debt. Even with financial aid, some students find it necessary to work part-time to cover all of their expenses. Need-based scholarships allow the student to focus entirely on their education and get the most out of their experience at the School of Engineering.

Merit-based scholarships are awarded to high performing high school graduates that the School of Engineering would like to have in our classrooms. These scholarships can make the difference in whether a student decides to come to SIUE or matriculates elsewhere. Attracting better students is critical to achieving a high level of academic excellence and being a great engineering school. These students become the leaders and models for the entire student body.

Another type of merit-based scholarship or award recognizes the outstanding academic performance of undergraduate or graduate students at the School of Engineering. These awards encourage students to do well academically as well as exhibit other qualities characteristic of working professionals in the various disciplines of engineering, computers, and construction.

Named scholarships are often seen as an affirmation of a student’s high level of performance and give the recipient, school, and donor prestige. Named Endowed scholarships are those where the principal is invested and only the interest is used to make the award, thus they exist in perpetuity. Endowed scholarships demonstrate a donor’s commitment to and confidence in the School of Engineering, bestowing on both a lasting recognition.
