Engineering Faculty Excellence

The SIUE School of Engineering has seen tremendous growth and has become the school of choice for increasingly well-prepared students. The average math and composite ACT scores of the fall 2013 freshman class are 28.5 and 27.5, respectively. This past fall marked the fifth consecutive year the School has achieved record undergraduate enrollment. Over the past five years, student enrollment has increased nearly 42 percent, corresponding to an annual growth of 7.3 percent.

"The reputation of our programs has been spreading rapidly through the region, which has increased enrollment significantly," said Dr. Hasan Sevim, dean of the School of Engineering. "We are fortunate to be able to respond to this high demand by hiring outstanding faculty who bring tremendous energy and pioneering ideas to the School."

The School’s academic success is related to the work of its faculty who effectively combine the best practices of teaching, scholarship and service. The following engineering professionals joined our faculty this fall:

Ryan Fries

"I chose to work in the SIUE School of Engineering because of the people. Every day, I come to work surrounded by those who share my dedication to teaching, my motivation for research and an honest enthusiasm for collaboration. It is great to work in a place where teaching excellence is highly valued, because that is what future engineers need and our students deserve. The SIUE School of Engineering also promotes the right mix of research to ensure its faculty stay current and continue to advance the field of engineering through cutting-edge studies. Faculty embrace the true spirit of teamwork and collaboration. The senior faculty members take stock in mentoring not only students, but also mentoring the newer professors to ensure the School continues to be a great place to work and learn. Overall, the SIUE School of Engineering is a great fit for me and a choice I would make again."
Ryan Fries, Ph.D., P.E.
Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering

Anne Werner

"Although SIUE is a very well-rounded University, the priority is our students. Faculty members place great emphasis on teaching and learning. Like at larger universities, students can choose from a great variety of degree programs, while still getting personal attention from their teachers and a great value for their tuition. The St. Louis Metro Area provides great opportunities to involve local industry in our teaching and projects, and provides a diverse student population. The administration is accessible and is concerned with faculty performance and happiness."
Anne Werner, Ph.D., P.E.
Assistant Professor, Construction Management

Albert Luo

"We have to challenge students with advanced knowledge and encourage them to think creatively about established knowledge," he said. "The ability to develop new ideas opens so many doors for my students."
