Evaluation and Action Academic Year 2012-2013

 

Academic year 2012-2013

A department meeting was held on October 25, 2013 to discuss the assessment data. It seems that all four outcomes that were items of concern in the previous year, namely a1, a2, c1 and k1, have improved.

Outcomes a1 and a2 each exhibit a failure rate of 18%. These were at 21% and 25% respectively in the previous year.  (Improvements are not yet attributable to the tutoring sessions since those started in Spring 2014.)  It was concluded that faculty identifying weaknesses in math skills early in the semester and adjusting their teaching accordingly helped with these two outcomes.

Outcome c1 has improved (18% failure rate compared to 23% in the previous year).

Outcome k1 has improved significantly (23% failure rate compared to 31% in the previous year), and is now within the prescribed threshold.

Regarding a1 and a2:

It was decided to stay the course with regard to ECE 210. The addition of tutoring sessions might further improve the performance in future semesters.

Regarding c1 and k1:

We will continue with the added MATLAB-based assignments in ECE 351 and ECE 375 and monitor these outcomes carefully in future semesters.

General improvement:

A faculty meeting was held regarding the qualifications to be sought in applicants for the faculty search to be conducted through Fall 2013 and Spring 2014. It was decided that a new faculty member with background in analog and digital electronics, VLSI design and possibly networking would best serve the needs of the department in terms of offering additional elective courses in these areas and mentoring some capstone design teams.
