Industry Outreach

School of Engineering Construction Industry Outreach

Ongoing Industry Involvement

The construction industry is and has always been a strong and outstanding supporter of the SIUE Department of Construction. Industry plays an active role in the department through the Industry Advisory Board. Industry also provides sponsorship by participating in the annual fall Networking Night, Alumni Association Golf Tournament in the spring, hosting jobsite visits and tours, and providing guest speakers and adjunct faculty.

Prior to graduating, construction management students must complete a 300-hour internship course. The construction industry provides valuable internship opportunities for students to help complete this requirement. Industry involvement is an essential element in maintaining a strong, high quality construction management degree program.

Construction Leadership Institute

The Construction Leadership Institute (CLI) is a 9-week executive education program jointly developed by the Department of Construction and the SIUE School of Business. CLI trains the area’s top emerging leaders in the architecture, engineering and construction (A/E/C) industry, helping to improve the processes and outcomes of the building industry by preparing the next generation of leaders.

Visit the Construction Leadership Institute for more information.

Plastic Shrinkage Cracks in Concrete

Plastic shrinkage cracks are fine cracks that occur on the surface of concrete before initial set. Although plastic shrinkage cracks may not be structurally detrimental, they are not visually appealing, and will likely impact long term durability of the concrete. Numerous studies [see ACI 305R, ACI 308R, Hover, NRMCA and Uno] have shown that the potential for plastic shrinkage cracking to occur is a function of the ambient weather conditions, particularly the humidity level and the wind speed, as well as the concrete mix design and fresh concrete temperature.
