Job Description/Responsibilities
The general purpose of this position is to appropriately manage the SDM Record Office staff who handles protected patient information using the axiUm software.  He/She will supervise a staff of eight (8).  Using axiUm the incumbent ensures the office is following all laws & guidelines pertaining to proper management of patient information.  Dental records consist of documents related to the history of present illness, clinical examination, diagnosis, treatment, & prognosis.  A thorough knowledge of dental hygiene is essential in order to supervise this area.  He/She will also work in coordination with team leaders to assign patients to students, to assist with patient scheduling & patient dental care.  He/She develops/monitors the clinic chair schedule as well as develops the sequence & timing of the various aspects of the work, to modify or recommend modification of instructions, and to participate in establishing priorities and defining objectives.  Additionally, he/she is responsible for coordination of data collection for the Quality Assurance & Infection Control program.  He/She will provide conventional preventative, therapeutic, and educational dental hygiene services for patients, including the examination of patients, removal of deposits and stains from teeth, application of localized medications, when applicable.  He/she serves as the patient advocate, assisting with solving patient concerns in conjunction with Team Leaders and the Clinical Dean.

Minimum Qualifications
Licensure as a dental hygienist.Two years (24 months) of experience comparable to that performed at the Dental Clinic Clerk II level of this series (see for Dental Clinic Clerk II qualifications).

Additional Skills and Knowledge Desired by Unit
CPR certification as well as the ability to organize and perform tasks independently is necessary to function well in the position.  As the patient advocate, excellent interpersonal communication skills are critical in addressing patient faculty and student concerns in an effective and diplomatic manner.  Supervisory/administrative skills are necessary for evaluating subordinates, organizing clerical operations and for enduring policies are followed.  In depth knowledge of the axiUm patient information system is highly desired and critical to this position.  Supervisory experience in a dental clinic setting is preferable.

$3,554 per month
