Job Description
The Academic Advisor provides accurate, current curricular information program major and minor requirements, transfer-credit evaluation, admission, probation, suspension, commencement eligibility, and graduation checks.  This individual assists in short-term and long-term academic program planning and support, assists in maintaining curriculum guides, serves as a referral to other offices and agencies, and provides counsel with regard to program changes and career plans.  The Academic Advisor assists in recruitment and retention. This position maintains and manages appropriate records.  S/he may be assigned other related tasks in support of the College of Arts & Sciences’ mission and goals.  The job responsibilities of this position may necessitate evening hours and occasional weekend assignments.

Qualifications Required

  • Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education, academic program within the College of Arts & Sciences, or closely related field. 
  • Knowledge of college student development, academic advising theory and the college environment
  • Knowledge of student support services available to college students
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and personal rapport with diverse population
  • Ability to use computerized student information systems
  • Detailed knowledge of University policies and procedures

Qualifications Preferred
Preferred applicants would hold an undergraduate degree from a major within the College of Arts & Sciences, at least one year of academic advising experience, and have assisted students with adjusting to college-level expectations.  Candidates who have graduate assistant experience in an area of student affairs will be considered.
