Southern Illinois University invites applications and resumes for the position of Associate General Counsel, Office of the General Counsel.

The position is charged with providing advice and support to the SIU Board of Trustees, President, SIUE Chancellor and other University administrators, faculty and staff, primarily on the Edwardsville campus. The primary responsibilities for this position include providing legal advice, interpretation, and representation in the areas of business and transactional matters, including but not limited to contracts, leases, procurement, licensing, sponsored research grants, athletics, clinical affiliations, and intellectual property matters. Other responsibilities include advising of University administration on policies and procedures, regulatory compliance issues involving state and federal laws, reviewing requests pursuant to the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, responding to subpoenas and records requests, service on University committees as designated, and performing other duties as assigned. This position reports to the General Counsel and will be located at the University’s Edwardsville campus. Occasional travel is required, including, but not limited to, the other University campuses in Carbondale and Springfield.

-Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school;
-At least five (5) years of experience in the licensed practice of law, preferably in an institution of higher education and/or a government setting;
-Experience in the areas of contract review, negotiations and drafting, business transactions, research and sponsored programs;
-A strong academic record;
-Excellent oral and written communication skills;
-Exceptional judgment, legal research skills, analytical problem solving abilities;
-The highest ethical standards, integrity, and trustworthiness;
-The ability to manage multiple and changing priorities;
-The ability to work in a team-oriented environment with an emphasis on collaboration, but also the capability to work independently with minimal oversight;
-Admission to the Bar of the State of Illinois within three (3) months of appointment to the position.
-Experience in matters of intellectual property is strongly preferred.

This is a security-sensitive position. A pre-employment background investigation, including a criminal background check, is required.

Compensation shall be commensurate with successful applicant’s experience and academic credentials.
