Are you looking for fun, stress-free learning opportunities in a university environment? How about personal development through affordable non-credit leisure learning classes?

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville offers a variety of non-credit leisure learning courses just for you - and you don't have to be an SIUE student or employee. Classes are open to everyone 16 and older in Edwardsville, the Metro East and the Greater St. Louis area.

Learn a language. Take piano lessons. Discuss foreign policy with respected professionals and University faculty at our Great Decisions lecture series . Discover a new hobby, brush up on a professional skill and make new friends.

OutreachSIUE represents the new commitment of the Office of Educational Outreach to encourage lifelong learning across the community. Focusing on classes that make a difference, OutreachSIUE is introducing more than 40 highly specialized and unique educational opportunities including a variety of small business, life writing, food blogging and photography classes and workshops.

The new programs kicks off this fall and are available to small-business owners, entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, SIUE alumni, students, faculty and staff and to everyone in the community.

This beginning level class is perfect for the beginning student or a continuation of our previous classes. It is perfect for those who have taken the previous classes, or who have had previous exposure to German language. The class promises to be a fun, interactive learning experience.

If you have always wanted to speak a second language this is your opportunity! Join us in exploring the Italian language and culture with a fun and interactive approach. Through videos, group discussions and occasional guests, you will be able to learn basic Italian and have a taste of the culture of this beautiful country. Participants in this class will begin to practice their conversation skills in Italian with less focus on grammar. This course is open to all levels but basic knowledge in Italian is helpful. You will be guided through this unique experience by a native Italian instructor.

This class is for students with some experience with Japanese conversation or for those who have had a previous Japanese language class.  The majority of class time will be spent speaking Japanese.  Conversations for everyday situations will be discussed and practiced.  Each session will focus on one topic including: food, travel, weather, and health.  Students will also learn to read and write the kana alphabets (Hiragana and Katakana); some kanji (Chinese characters) will also be learned.  NOTE: The first week of this class will be a review of what was taught in the Basic class.

Students learn and practice basic conversations. Conversation for potential situations experienced while traveling and in the course of everyday life will be covered. This class will also cover Japanese culture and daily foods. No textbook purchase required.

This class is designed for students who have previously taken a Spanish language class or who are familiar with some basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar. During this class, students will be provided with many online tools that will help them to advance at their own speed / level. Classes will be fun and interactive.  Students will personalize individual binders with information that they find helpful and pertinent to their personal area of interest within the Spanish language. The required textbook is available for purchase from the University Bookstore. Textbooks are non-returnable; you may wish to purchase only after there is sufficient registration to hold the class.

This noncredit class will provide an overview of American Sign Language (ASL), its basic vocabulary, structure, syntax and grammar. Students will focus on mastering the basics of fingerspelling, numbers, colors, facial grammar and sentence structure; students will also learn conversational/cultural behaviors necessary to hold a beginning level conversation in ASL, with deaf/hard-of-hearing users of the language. Introductory information about deaf culture will also be presented, along with deaf humor, to provide students with a broad picture of language and culture.

This activity consists of a pre-test, and four 3-hour sessions focused on math skills, vocabulary/grammar, science, and general test-taking strategies. Textbook, practice tests, and handout materials included. Bring a calculator and #2 pencils. (NO Mechanical Pencils)

Cancellation & Refund Policy:  The Office of Educational Outreach reserves the right to cancel or postpone activities and substitute qualified instructors when necessary.  If we cancel an activity for any reason, you may select another activity or receive a FULL refund.  An attempt will be made to notify you by phone when it is necessary to cancel an activity.  If you cancel no later than five (5) business days prior to the activity start date, you are eligible for a full refund, minus a 10% processing fee or $10.00 (the greater of the 2), or you may select to have your registration fee transferred to another activity.  Otherwise, no refund will be issued.     If you can't come, send a friend!
