Type of teaching unit:  Lesson Plan

Grade Level(s):  2nd, 3rd, 4th

Time Frame: 2 days

TEACHER INFORMATION:

School:  Officer Elementary School

Email Address:  lebnme1@yahoo.com

Lesson plan description and rationale:

The children will be learning to relate where they live to other surrounding areas.  Understanding the different types of residential areas will help them in the future understand what types of opportunities, businesses, and people can be found in each area.

State Standard(s):

17.A.1a  Identify physical characteristics of places, both local and global

Objectives:

The children will be able to analyze and arrange new information presented to them into rural, urban or suburban areas.

Methods:

1.  We will begin the lesson by performing a KWL chart.  The

topic will be what we know about cities, what we know about

towns and small communities and what we know about rural places.

2. The children will view a power point presentation containing photos of the

different types of  land use. (0r give the printed/lamented photos for the

    children to preview.)

3.  The children will be asked to look at each photo again and

determine the number of people (few, some, many) , the type of land, the

types of buildings (few, some, many) and any other unique characteristics

about the photo. The children will be given a Venn Diagram to

compare and contrast the photos.  They will be asked to note what is the

same in each photo (people, buildings, businesses, etc.) and what is

different (the number of people, types of buildings, types of businesses,

     etc.).

 4. On the second day, the kids will be given photos of nearby

surrounding areas and asked to categorize them as either urban, rural or

suburban. After they have finished categorizing the photos, they will be

asked to respond in writing why each photo was put into the category

     they placed it into.

Evaluation:

The children will be given laminated photos of St. Louis, MO, East St. Louis, IL and the Breese, IL  area and asked to classify each one as urban, suburban, or rural.  The children will be able to tell why in writing each photo is either a rural, urban or suburban area.
