Methods

Anticipatory Set:   Students will view the video (parts 3-5), “A Day With Edison”.  The class will then create a concept chart including the who, what, when, where and why of the video.

1.    The students will view two photographs that show light bulbs being used.  They will discuss how this invention effects their lives today.

2.    Students will go on a light bulb hunt throughout the school.  The class will tally up the number of light bulbs they see in each area of the building.

3.    Each student will be required to conduct a light bulb search in two rooms at their home and tally the total number of bulbs found. Student Tally Sheet

4.    The class will create a bar graph depicting how many light bulbs they found for each area.  They will discuss how much this invention impacts everything they do.

5.    Each student will create an individual book titled Light Up My Life.  This book will include illustrations created by the students showing where light bulbs are used in their lives.

Evaluation

Students will be assessed on the tally sheet they bring from home after going on the light bulb hunt.  They will also be assessed on the creation of their individual book Light Up My Life.  A rubric for both of these items has been included. Lesson 1 Rubrics
