 Description:

Students will view two photographs to estimate the time period the photographs were taken and place the location  in an appropriate area on the United States map.  Students will be looking at Yellowstone National Park in 1872.  The students will learn that Yellowstone National Park was our first National Park.

 State Standard:

16A2c-Ask questions and seek answers by collecting and analyzing data from historic documents, images and other literary and non-literary sources

17A2a-Compare the physical characteristics of places including soil, land forms, vegetation, wildlife, climate, natural hazards

 Objectives:

Students will use a physical map of the United States and will be able to give an appropriate estimate of where Yellowstone Park is located based on the geography in the photographs.   Students will be able to draw on prior knowledge and give an estimate within 100 years of the date in the photograph.

  Methods:

1.      Look at a physical map of the United States and have students recall mountain ranges, central plains, and river regions.

2.    Show the two photographs of Yellowstone National park and have students work in pre-arranged groups of three to predict on chart paper:

a.     Where the park is located based on evidence in the picture-students will write the evidence

b.     What the time period of the picture is based on evidence in the picture-students will write the evidence

3.    Have each group present its guess with support using the chart paper as a presentation visual.

4.    After discussion and review of each prediction, have students locate and mark the actual spot Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming on their physical maps.  Have them mark the date 1872.

Evaluation:

Collect the chart paper (make sure each group has put every group member’s name on the chart paper) and evaluate the predictions based on evidence as valid or not valid.  My grades are based on a point system, and the students will get 10 points for each valid prediction-20 points total.
