Lesson Plan Description and Rationale: The importance of our past

presidents is an intregal part of our social science curriculum. The purpose

of this lesson is to introduce the students to our 1st President, George

Washington. The students will understand how George Washington

influenced our country and the reason for his monument in Washington, D.C.

State Standards:

State Goal 16: Understand events, trends, individuals, and movements shaping

the history of Illinois, the United States, and other nations.

State Goal 16A: Apply the skills of historical analysis and interpretation.

 

Objectives:

1.    Students will appreciate the importance of our 1st President, George

Washington.

2.    Students will view various primary sources.

3.    Students will acquire knowledge about George Washington through

books and classroom resources.

4.    Students will understand the importance of monuments and memorials.

1.    Kidspiration

 

Methods:

1.    The teacher will pass around a $1.00 bill asking students to analyze

everything they see on the front and the back of the bill.

2.    The teacher will then pass around a quarter asking students to do the

same.

3.    Students will then predict how the two pieces of currency are alike.

4.    Teacher will show the students a primary source picture of

George Washington before reading A Picture Book of George Washington

by David Adler.

5.    As a whole class, students will complete the fill-in-the-blank sentences

on a George Washington word search match (downloaded from

http://www.atozteacherstuff.com).

6.    After completing the sentences, students will do the word search

independently.

7.    Students will work cooperatively to complete a mini-book on George

Washington (downloaded from http://www.enchantedlearning.com).

8.    Students will create a concept map of facts about George Washington

on Kidspiration.

9.    Students will write a research report on George Washington using a

writing template provided by the teacher and the facts and information

found from previous activities (downloaded from http://www.abcteach.com).

10. Students will understand the importance of monuments by reading the

book Symbols of Freedom: The Washington Monument by: Lola Schaefer

and by viewing the primary sources of the Washington Monument.

 

Evaluation:

1.    Students will complete a mini-book on George Washington (downloaded

from http://www.enchantedlearning.com).

2.    Students will write a report on George Washington using facts they

found in their mini-book.
