Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders combines classroom instruction and research and provides opportunities for practical experiences in a variety of settings.
The special education program offers Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation-approved programs at the undergraduate level for teaching licensure as a learning behavior specialist (LBS I).
The special education program at SIUE is a nationally recognized program delivered through a a collaborative partnership agreement betwee SIUE and public school districts. Classroom teachers and university professors work together to provide special education majors a unique opportunity to regularly interact with children from kindergarten to grade 12. The special education program, in conjunction with the early childhood program in Curriculum and Instruction, also provides courses required for early childhood special education approval.
Graduates of the special education program have the opportunity to work in a multitude of settings, such as public or private schools, alternative schools, and day treatment or residential settings. The LBS I licensure will allow graduates to teach students with a variety of disabilities from kindergarten through grade 12.
