Welcome

The faculty and staff of the Department of Psychology at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville welcome you to our department!

We offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate psychology courses that reflect the breadth of psychology while allowing our students to gain a deep understanding of specific areas such as human development, learning and memory, motivation, perception, cognition, measurement, personality, experimental, psychobiology, social, clinical, and industrial/organizational psychology.

Students may also take independent research courses under faculty supervision in a wide variety of topic areas. Field study courses and practical training experiences are available in a range of psychological service organizations, agencies, and businesses. The Robert J. McLaughlin Psychology Undergraduate Honors Academy is also available for eligible students.

The department offers masters degrees in the following areas: Clinical-Adult Psychology, Clinical Child and School Psychology, and Industrial/Organizational Psychology. We also offer a Specialist Degree in School Psychology. All our graduate programs offer students a balance between theory and application. While our graduate programs prepare students to compete successfully for jobs at the masters level, many of our graduates go on to doctoral study.

In recent years, our department and faculty have received several important honors. We are extremely proud of our large and active chapter of Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology. In 1994, we received the National Chapter Award, and in 1995, Professor Robert O. Engbretson received the Psi Chi National Advisor Award. In 1996, our department received the first Paul Simon Teaching Research Award, among the most prestigious awards SIUE offers, for "outstanding efforts linking teaching and research in the classroom." In 2002, Professor Sue Thomas received the SIUE Alumni Association Great Teacher Award. The Department of Psychology also received the 2006 Award for Institutional Progress in Student Learning Outcomes from the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) recognizing our efforts to assess and improve student learning outcomes. For more information on how this award recognized our high-caliber faculty and their attention to student learning, see our CHEA web site.

We are proud of our students and the quality of our undergraduate and graduate programs. Welcome to our department!
