At Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, we offer three of the leading psychology master's programs in Illinois, as well as a specialist degree in school psychology. Our unique location — just 22 miles from St. Louis, Missouri — provides students with outstanding professional and recreational opportunities. As is typical of the highest-quality psychology graduate programs that require fieldwork, we offer only full-time programs with almost all classes occurring during the day.

A complete psychology graduate application file contains all of the materials listed below.

(All links on this page will open in a new window.)

1. Psychology Application Form (rtf format) (pdf format)

2. Goal Statement/Statement of Purpose
Your goal statement should contain approximately 500 words.

3. Resumé
Following your goal statement, please include a resumé that summarizes relevant academic and work experiences.

4. Three Letters of Recommendation (rtf format) (pdf format)
Each letter must be accompanied by the letter form (use either the rtf or pdf link above). It is preferable that your letters come from professors who can discuss your academic performance and potential.

5. Official GRE Scores
The General Test is required. The Psychology Subject Test is optional. Your GRE scores are only one of several pieces of information we use to evaluate your application and we do not use a minimum cut off score. Among recently admitted applicants, GRE score averages have been in or near the 40th-60th percentile range. For the GRE General Test, use school code 1759 for Psychology.

6. Graduate School Application and $40 Application Fee (Graduate School Application Form)
This is separate from the Psychology Application Form. A copy of this application form is sent from Graduate Admissions to us after processing. If you need to contact the Graduate School, the phone number is (618) 650-3010. The Graduate Catalog, policies and other information for graduate students is available at http://www.siue.edu/graduate/.

7. Official Transcripts
A copy of your official transcripts will be sent from Graduate Admissions to us after processing. We do not use a minimum cut off score for grade point averages, but over the last several years, the average grade point average of accepted applicants has been in the 3.3 to 3.8 (out of 4.0) range.

Disclosures

Unless applicants request otherwise, the contact information of applicants who are rejected from psychology graduate programs may be shared with other, similar graduate programs at SIUE. This gives applicants who are not admitted to a psychology program the chance to learn about other SIUE graduate programs for which they may be a good fit. For example, an applicant who is rejected from the industrial/organizational psychology program may be recommended to the admissions committee of the Instructional Technology program (a program which can involve some coursework in corporate training). If you object to being contacted by another SIUE graduate program after the psychology department has made a decision about your application, please notify the Graduate Secretary via email. A request to keep your contact information within the psychology department will not affect your chances of admission to a psychology graduate program.

The SIUE Annual Security Report contains safety, security and crime information. This report is published in compliance with Federal law, entitled the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act."

Program Course Prerequisites

All graduate programs in our department have these prerequisites*:

Introductory Psychology
Statistics (behavioral science statistics)
Research Methods/Experimental Psychology (a course about data collection, analysis, and reporting)

* If you are missing one or two prerequisites for any program, you may still be provisionally accepted. Provisional acceptance comes with an understanding, established with the faculty in the program to which you've been admitted, that you must take any missing prerequisite course and earn a "B" or higher grade before your program begins. Details of any such arrangement will be described in your admission letter. The prerequisite courses which appear on this page may be taken at SIUE or another accredited institution. These courses are normally available each summer at SIUE.

Additional prerequisites for each program are as follows:

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM*
Abnormal Psychology/Psychopathology
Physiological Psychology/Biopsychology

*Previously known as the Clinical Adult Psychology program

CLINICAL CHILD AND SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM
Child Psychology/Development or Adolescent Psychology/Development
Abnormal Psychology/Psychopathology
Psychological Tests and Measurements

INDUSTRIAL-ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM
Introduction to Industrial/Organizational Psychology
Psychological Tests and Measurements

GRE Requirements
All applicants are required to take the General GRE. The GRE Psychology Subject Test is optional. Information regarding the GRE can be obtained from http://www.ets.org/gre.

Deadline
New students are admitted exclusively in the fall semester (which begins in late August). All application materials are due no later than January 15th. However, the Clinical Child and School Psychology program has a priority application deadline of December 1st, with applications completed before this deadline given first consideration. First consideration includes a chance for the applicant to participate in an earlier on-campus interview day.

Applicants to all programs should be aware that submitting an application before December 1st is also preferred because the application for the optional Competitive Graduate Award is early December. Thus, preparing your application in November is the best strategy. Applications will continue to be reviewed until all available positions in each program are filled.

Psychology Graduate Assistantships
Several departmental graduate assistantships are available to some psychology students who are admitted. Also available to psychology students are assistantships administered by other SIUE departments and offices. These assistantships are posted here. Each year, many first-year students obtain assistantships somewhere on campus, although some of the interviewing and hiring does not occur until late summer. Students who receive assistantships from the Department of Psychology or another SIUE department get a stipend and tuition (but not fee) remission.

In 2014 and 2015, more than 90% of first-year graduate students obtained assistantships. Some of these assistantships were in the psychology department but others were in other SIUE departments. Note that although start dates for assistantships are almost always at the beginning of the fall semester, some SIUE departments do not begin hiring until July or August.

Students from underrepresented groups who have not yet been offered an assistantship should consider applying for the Graduate Scholar Award. The Graduate Scholar Award provides a tuition waiver for two academic terms, but not a stipend. The deadline for the Graduate Scholar Award is normally in March, but should be confirmed on the Graduate Scholar Award web page.

Graduate School Financial Aid
The SIUE Graduate School offers Competitive Graduate Awards and Graduate Scholar Awards to qualified applicants. Please check the deadlines for these awards and consider applying for them. Additional information regarding graduate student financial aid can be found on the Financial Aid web site.

International Students
We welcome applications from international students. Please refer to the web site of International Student Services for helpful information.

Housing
You can visit the University Housing web site at http://www.siue.edu/housing/ for information about on-campus and off-campus housing.

Additional Information
The registrar's website has information about class schedules and course descriptions, and also has a link to the graduate catalog. Information about tuition and fees is posted at http://www.siue.edu/paying-for-college/.

If you need any additional information or clarification beyond the information provided here, please contact our Graduate Secretary by email or call (618) 650-2203.
