Saturday Junior Academy
SIUE East St. Louis Charter School Launches Saturday Junior Academy
The S.I.U.E. - E. St. Louis Charter High School launched a Saturday Junior Academy with the mission to provide junior class students expanded learning opportunities in the area of reading, math, writing and test taking skills just prior to taking the annual Prairie State Achievement Examination (PSAE) required of all Illinois High School juniors.  The Goal of the Saturday Junior Academy is to equip the junior class with the knowledge and test taking skills necessary to meet or exceed the academic standards on the two components of the PSAE:  The ACT Test and the WorkKeys Test.

During the four Saturday Junior Academy sessions attendance ranged from 62% of the eligible juniors the first week to 86% the fourth. The students came voluntarily and learned in an incentive-rich, supportive learning environment at the SIUE - E. St. Louis Charter High School located on the campus of the E. St. Louis Higher Education Center. If a picture is worth a thousand words, the above picture depicts the joy and excitement the students experienced throughout their Saturday Junior Academy experience.

Bessie May Briggs Mason
Bessie May Briggs Mason Scholarship
Dr. and Mrs. Briggs visited the SIUE campus on June 10th, 2010 to meet with the newest recipients of the Bessie May Briggs Mason Scholarship.  The Briggs established the Bessie May Briggs Mason Scholarship in 1998 in memory of his aunt.  In 2001, Dr. Briggs created an endowment which turned the scholarship into a perpetual gift to students.

The scholarship was created in honor of Dale’s aunt, Mrs. Bessie May Briggs Mason, a 1918 Alton (Illinois) High School graduate.  She had an intense desire to become a teacher.  Due to financial reasons, Ms. Briggs was unable to attend college and pursue a teaching career.  However, throughout her life, she continued to maintain her interest in the education of children.  Even though Mrs. Mason was unable to become a professional teacher, the Bessie May Briggs Mason Scholarship and Endowment helps others to realize their goals to attend college and become teachers.

The Bessie May Briggs Mason Endowed Scholarship has had an immense impact on students, being awarded twenty-four times over the last eleven years.  Although Bessie May Briggs Mason was never able to attend college and become a teacher, the legacy she has left at the SIUE School of Education is allowing others to live her dream.
