  • Psychology students Jennifer Ritchie, Heather Jeffers, Justin Little and Laura Schulz won a second place award for their research poster (titled “Differences and Similarities Between College Students’ Values and Their Parents’ Values”) at the Missouri Undergraduate Psychology Conference held November 7th at Lindenwood University. These undergraduate and graduate students were mentored by Dr. Eva Dreikurs Ferguson.
  • Stephanie Comstock also presented a research poster at the Missouri Undergraduate Psychology Conference.
  • Dr. Jeremy Jewell is in the news again, this time for his participation in a youth forum in which local teenagers discussed common adolescent stressors in the presence of a number of mental health professionals. The forum was held Nov. 9th in the Morris University Center. In the article below, Jeremy mentions a stress-reduction/relaxation program he has been involved in at the Madison County Juvenile Detention Home (while offering to help the teens who were at the forum set up such a program of their own). http://www.thetelegraph.com/news/students-32950-problems-young.html
  • Mal Goldsmith, Professor of Health Education in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, has been elected President-elect of the American School Health Association. The mission of the American School Health Association is to protect and promote the health of children and youth by supporting coordinated school health programs as a foundation for school success. Mal has also been honored by his selection this summer to participate in a groundbreaking gathering of higher education school health education faculty, which was sponsored by the American Cancer Society and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Caroline Pryor, Associate Professor in Curriculum and Instruction, has been notified that the SOE has been funded for an unprecedented third year for the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute on Abraham Lincoln and the Forging of Modern America! It will certainly be exciting to have teachers from around the country (and perhaps internationally!) join us once again on campus next year!
  • Jeremy Jewell and Paul Rose, faculty in the Department of Psychology, have recently received $149,386 in funding for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration TI-09-003 Adult Treatment Drug Courts, Madison County Illinois Drug Court Treatment Enhancement. Congratulations on this critical work!
  • Eva Ferguson, Professor of Psychology, has been recognized by the honorary president of the Centro de Estudios Adlerianos for having such an impressive attendance at her lecture in Uruguay that it was described an “historical event”. We are fortunate to have someone of Dr. Ferguson’s international caliber on our faculty!
  • The Lambda Theta Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi at SIUE was awarded the Achieving Chapter Excellence Award, which is the highest recognition that KDP bestows on its institutional chapters. Special kudos to Barbara O’Donnell, Associate Professor in Curriculum and Instruction, for her outstanding leadership!
  • Christi Donsbach, our Director of Development and Alumni Relations, has been selected to participate in the Coro Women’s Leadership program! This program focuses on the development of leadership skills for women in a variety of positions throughout the St. Louis region.
  • Amy Wilkinson, the Director of the Teaching with Primary Sources initiative, was selected by the Library of Congress to attend a meeting in Washington this summer with national researchers and educational specialists to focus on TPS assessment metrics for the national program. Amy’s involvement reflects highly on the caliber of her leadership and the visibility of SIUE’s TPS program!
  • KHE’s Gamma Delta Chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma, the National Honor Society in Health Education,  has been selected to receive a National Chapter Recognition Award at the National Meeting of Eta Sigma Gamma this October in Denver, Colorado. The Award is based on the chapter’s activities as well as participation in projects involving teaching, research, and service. This past year SIUE’s chapter coordinated several outreach activities including: a Madison County Youth Forum, a Youth Leadership Conference, World AIDS Day activities, and programs associated with National Condom Week. The chapter also assisted many school districts with Health Fairs, and supported the Madison County Health Department and Madison County AIDS Program in their initiatives. Chapter officers include Megan Rowe (President), Shane Stephens (Vice-president), Laura Prochazka (Treasurer), and Jamie Hovey (Secretary). The organization’s faculty advisor is Mal Goldsmith.
