What are the advantages of this program?

This program is a content-specific Master’s degree with a balance between math related pedagogy and math content courses.  It is designed to improve the teaching and student learning of mathematics at the secondary school level.  This program aligns with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards for Adolescence and Young Adulthood/ Mathematics.

Who will be considered for admission in this program?

Current teachers who have earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or its equivalent and are currently teaching Mathematics in a high needs district will be considered for admission to the program.  In addition, candidates must meet the requirements for admission to the Masters in Secondary Education.  Current admission criteria may be found at the following website: http://www.siue.edu/graduate/catalog/ch1/admission_policies.shtml

Can I complete this program if I do not have a Bachelor’s in Mathematics but I have a high school mathematics endorsement?

It would depend upon a transcript evaluation by the Mathematics department.  It is assumed that students will have the knowledge and experience of many upper level mathematics courses in order to succeed in the Mathematics content courses within this program.

How long will it take to complete?

The 36 credit hour program will take 3 years to complete.  Participants will take one course (3 credits) each Fall and Spring semester and three courses (7 credits) in the summers.  Students starting the program Spring 2009 will complete the program by the end of Summer 2011.

What are the costs?

This program is contingent upon grant funding.  If the grant is fully funded as expected, SIUE will waive tuition for the classes required for this program and the grant will cover all associated course fees and books.

Are there any requirements from my school or district for me to participate?

Yes, your school and district administration must approve your participation in this program by completing the District Agreement Form.  Teams from schools not meeting AYP are encouraged to apply.
