Purpose of the Program
To improve the literacy development of children in grades 1-12 who have reading and writing difficulties. Individualized assessment and instruction is provided by certified teachers and qualified graduate students in the Literacy Education Program under the direction of literacy professors in the Teaching and Learning Department.

Description of the Program
In the literacy clinic, your child will receive individualized reading and writing assessments and tutoring. During the first semester, your child will be given specific assessments to identify their literacy strengths and needs, and you will receive a written diagnostic report describing the assessments and an anaylsis of the results. Based on assessment results, students are selected for tutoring. Assessment information is used by the tutor to plan and teach individualized lessons during the semester to enhance your child’s literacy development through problem solving strategies and skills during reading and writing of authentic texts.

Every summer elementary children are assessed for 2-3 sessions for 75 minutes each, followed by a report and family conference. During the fall and/or spring semesters, tutoring is provided once a week from 5:30- 6:50 pm followed by a family meeting for a 14-week period.

We are located in the Literacy Center in Founders Hall, Room 1317, on the SIUE campus. Maps and directions are available here.

The fee for each semester of assessment and/or tutoring is $100.00. These fees include all assessments, diagnostic reports, instructional materials and a SIUE Lot A parking pass.

Families may apply for their child’s participation in the clinic to improve his or her reading and writing. Complete and return both the family and teacher application forms (Download the family form and the teacher form here). This will provide us information about your child from your family, school, and current classroom teacher to guide our assessment and instruction. Complete and return the forms to the Teaching and Learning Department or email them to Dr. Stephanie McAndrews.

The criteria for selection of a child is based on when the completed application forms are received, the literacy needs, number of SIUE graduate students enrolled during the semester, and cooperation of family and student. New students are accepted each semester, but due to limitations we are unable to guarantee admission within a given semester. Families are contacted by letter or phone when an opening is available and provided with dates and times of assesments and tutoring sessions. In order to derive maximum benefit for the graduate student and the child, consistent attendance is required. If necessary, one session may be made up, however, after two absences, a new child may be selected for the program.
