Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Nutrition focuses on the study of foods and nutrients and their effect on the health of individuals. The program combines coursework in both the basic sciences and nutritional sciences to provide students with the preparation needed to excel in a variety of professional nutrition and health settings. It provides exceptional preparation for graduate and professional training in a wide range of nutrition, health and medical fields. 

Nutrition at SIUE

The BS in Nutrition major emphasizes intensive study in biological and physical sciences as a basis for understanding the science of nutrition and the relationships between nutrients and human health. Core course requirements focus on human nutrition with areas of study in energy metabolism, proteins, vitamins, minerals, community nutrition and diet in the prevention and treatment of diseases. Students earning a BS in Nutrition will have an in-depth knowledge of the science of nutrition and a solid foundation in applied science.

Career Outlook

An undergraduate degree in nutrition provides pre-professional training for students wishing to enter graduate school to pursue a career as a dietitian. Students must complete graduate training and 1200 hours of internship to begin a career as a registered dietitian (RD).

However, career options are available for students with a bachelor's in nutrition. Typically, students graduating with a BS in Nutrition can pursue careers in, community and public health, consulting-private practice, food/nutrition business industry, food service, management, research and education, sports and wellness nutrition, corporate wellness, and jobs for those without the RD credential.

Nutrition Can Help You Prepare for Careers in Medicine and Other Allied Health Careers

This major is designed to meet the admissions requirements of most colleges of medicine, nursing, dental, optometry, pharmacy and other post-graduate programs in dietetics and health care, while the student pursues a bachelor’s degree in a clinically related area. Refer to the Pre-Health Professional webpage for more specific information on how the Nutrition courses correspond with typical professional school requirements. The major also prepares students to enter graduate school programs in nutrition and other life sciences. Graduates in Nutritional Sciences qualify for positions in the food industry, corporate wellness and health promotion programs, public health programs, pharmaceutical sales and similar occupations.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the nutrition program, students must:

  • Earn a grade of C or better in Biology 140 or Biology 150 or its equivalent
  • Earn a grade C or better in Chemistry 120a & 124a or Chemistry 121a & 125a or their equivalents.
  • Earn a grade of B or better in KIN 275 Introduction to Exercise Science
  • Obtain a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher
