Elective Suggestions - Nutrition

These suggested electives provide an understanding of and preparation for further study in Dietetics and Nutrition.

BIOL 150 Introduction to Biological Sciences I - [INSM] First of a two-course sequence, introduction to biochemistry, molecular genetics, cell structure and function, and evolution. Lab required. Prerequisites: CHEM 121a and CHEM 125a with grades of C or better.

CHEM 121a General Chemistry - [(a) INSM or DNSM] [IAI No. P1 902], [(b) DNSM] University-level modern chemistry for science students, atomic structure, molecular bonding, structure, stoichiometry, chemical change, equilibrium, qualitative analysis. Four lecture hours per week. Must be taken in sequence. Prerequisites: (a) high school chemistry and: placement by ACT Math score; or placement by Chemistry Readiness Exam; or successful completion of 113 and MATH 120 (or higher MATH course). (b) C or better in 121a.

CHEM 121b General Chemistry - [(a) INSM or DNSM] [IAI No. P1 902], [(b) DNSM] University-level modern chemistry for science students, atomic structure, molecular bonding, structure, stoichiometry, chemical change, equilibrium, qualitative analysis. CHEM 241a Organic Chemistry - [DNSM] Structural types of organic compounds correlated with chemical and physical properties. Bonding, reaction dynamics, reaction types, stereochemistry, functional groups, spectroscopic methods. Three lecture hours per week. Must be taken in sequence. Prerequisites: (a) 121b; (b) 241a; concurrent enrollment in CHEM 245.
