Description:  They provide availability of community mental health services for residents of Madison County who are affected by mental illness, developmental disabilities or substance abuse.

Volunteer Opportunities:  There are local area networks (LAN) that are offered for people to volunteer.  These networks are people of a community getting together to help meet the needs of the at-risk children and their families.

Educational Programs:  They hold many conferences and network meetings located at different places.  One example is the LAN group holds meetings at the YWCA in Alton, IL.

Description:  NAMI is a nationwide organization for families and friends experiencing serious mental illnesses.  It is a self-help, education, and advocacy organization to improve the quality of life for those who suffer from these issues.

Volunteer Opportunities:  One may become a family education teacher, work in the NAMI office, volunteer as a “resource monitor”, be a membership caller, serve as a peer support person, or become a support group facilitator.  You can also volunteer for the visitor’s program for Chester and Alton Mental Health Center

Educational Programs:  They offer a NAMI Basics class that will teach fundamentals for caring for oneself, a family, or your child with a mental illness.  It also covers a variety of mental illnesses along with communication, coping skills, school system roles, and many other topics.  They also offer a Peer-to-Peer class on recovery and a Family-to-Family course that covers severe mental illnesses and is specifically for family members.
