Description:  Lekotek helps children with special needs.  It is a nationwide program that offers family play sessions, toy lending libraries, family computer centers, and other community specific programs.  The Lekotek in Alton focuses on children ages’ birth to 8.  Lekotek helps children with all types of disabilities build new skills through special play.

Volunteer Opportunities:  It can vary from repairing broken toys, orchestrate playgroups, plan fundraising events, or just donating time to the children.

Educational Programs:  They can provide informational presentations.

Description:  IMPACT is a self-help advocacy organization that is operated by people with disabilities.  They assist people with disabilities to achieve their full human potential.  They provide many services that vary from peer counseling, self-advocacy, support groups, and many other services that work within the community.

Educational Programs:  IMPACT staff can provide disability awareness presentations and sensitivity training to schools, businesses, civic organizations, health care professionals, and others.  They also offer a sign language class.

Fees: In-Home Care is charged at an hourly rate with the minimum of a 4 hour shift.  For the Adult Day Program they have full and half day rates.  Charges include breakfast, lunch, and snacks.

Description:  They make positive differences in the lives of people challenged by aging or disabilities.  They provide dependable and compassionate support through direct care, advocacy, education, and outreach to individuals.

Volunteer Opportunities:  A volunteer can offer transportation, shopping, companionship, minor home repairs, and seasonal yard maintenance.

Educational Programs:  They provide support groups.

STARnet Region IV (Support and Technical Assistance Regionally)

Fees:  They provide free trainings.

Description:  They provide training, assistance, and resources to parents of young children with special needs.  STARnet IV serves the early childhood community in 38 counties in southern Illinois focusing on the age’s birth to eight.

Volunteer Opportunities:  They give you the opportunity to fill out a needs assessment for their program.  They want input on what topics should be addressed or worked on.  They also provide the helpful educational programs for free.

Educational Programs:  They provide free online workshops that focus on the use of technology as a tool to assist young children with disabilities.  It is called EC-TIIS (The Early Childhood Technology Integrated Educational System).  There is also the chance to be apart of a study group.  This is a group of at least 4 people who want to broaden their skill knowledge of specific topics related to children with disabilities.

Description: St. Louis Learning Disabilities Association is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to enhancing the understanding and acceptance of learning disabilities. They provide observation, consultation, and diagnostic testing to determine if a disability is present, consult with parents about available options, provide one-on-one tutoring and study skill classes to reinforce classroom lessons, work with school officials and physicians to ensure all learning opportunities are given, and provide workshops and seminars for parents, teachers, and other professionals to help better understand the nature of learning disabilities.
