PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Department of Kinesiology and Health Education offers a program of study leading to the Master of Science in Education degree with a major in kinesiology. Within the degree program five emphases are available.

The Sport Management option is designed to prepare students with management skills for careers as athletic directors or physical education department heads in public schools or community colleges or as administrators in the burgeoning sport industry, including professional and amateur sport organizations and corporate settings. The degree is
designed to meet the needs of graduate students with and without teaching backgrounds.

ADMISSION

Selection for admission is determined by the graduate faculty in kinesiology in the Department of  Kinesiology and Health Education. In addition to Graduate School admission standards, program admission criteria include grade point average achieved in previous professional preparation, experience, communication skills, and recommendations from professional associates indicating the applicant's competency and interest in the discipline and the related professions.  Applicants must have an undergraduate grade point average of at least 2.75 (A=4.0).  Only courses in which the student earned a grade of "B" or better will be considered for transfer credit.

Admission may be granted to applicants who have a bachelor's degree and meet the aforementioned criteria, although any prerequisites necessary to study in a particular emphasis are at the discretion of the program adviser.

KIN 500 Behavior Analysis of Sport
KIN 510 Historical, Current, and Comparative Issues in Kinesiology
KIN 515 Research Methods in Kinesiology
KIN 535 Administrative Theory and Practice in Sport
KIN 536 Facility Management and Design
KIN 537 Development and Governance of World Sport
KIN 555 Internship in Kinesiology (Sport Management)
ECON 439 Economics of Sport
MKTG 470 Sport Financial Management

Electives:  6 hours:  Choose two courses from the following:

FIN 595, KIN 552, MGMT 595, PSYC 573, PSYC 564, or other approved electives.

Thesis Option:  6 hours: 
KIN 599 - Thesis in Kinesiology

**Note:  While new courses are awaiting approval, KIN 550 Selected Topics in Kinesiology is serving as host course for the following sport management additional elective courses:

Legal Issues in Sport, Research Methods in Sport Management, Issues in Athletics and Education, Strategic Management in Sport Industry, Structure and Policies of Intercollegiate and Interscholastic Sport, Research Methods in Sport Management, Seminar in Kinesiology

EXIT REQUIREMENTS

Students must demonstrate competence in the content comprising the major (kinesiology and area of emphasis) by passing a written comprehensive examination.
