Exercise Physiology Curriculum

Thesis Option - 30 hours
Non-Thesis Option - 30 hours

CORE (27 hours)
KIN 501 Behavioral Analysis of Exercise - Provides an in-depth analysis of psychosocial factors related to preventive and rehabilitative exercise behavior.

KIN 509 Research Methods in Kinesiology - Prepare students to read, understand, and evaluate research in the field of kinesiology.

KIN 512 Advanced Exercise Physiology - Discussion and application of the physiological and metabolic effects that occur at rest and during exercise in humans.

KIN 514 Advanced Exercise Assessment and Prescription - Discussion and application of the cardiovascular and respiratory physiological effects that occur at rest and during exercise in humans. Includes interpretation of electrocardiograms (ECG).

KIN 516 Advanced Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiology - Provides in-depth training for the various concepts related to exercise assessment and prescription for healthy persons and those with chronic disease and/or disability.

KIN 517 Pathophysiology and Treatment of Obesity - Provides in-depth content of the etiology, pathophysiology, prevention and treatments for obesity in adults and children.

KIN 518 Exercise Endocrinology - To provide content on the cellular and systems physiology of the neuro-endocrine system, as well as present research-based findings of how exercise alters neuro-endocrine function.

KIN 541 Advanced Human Nutrition and Metabolism - Discussion and application of macronutrients and micronutrients on metabolism in health and disease

KIN 597 Seminar in Exercise Physiology - Review and discussion of historically classic articles and current research in exercise physiology.

Non-Thesis option (3 hours)
KIN 555 Internship in Exercise Physiology - Individualized planned experience in agency, organization, or institution appropriate to student's area of professional interest. Prerequisite: consent of instructor.

Thesis Option (3 hours)
KIN 599 - Thesis in Kinesiology - Students selecting thesis track must earn minimum of 3 credit hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite: KIN 515.

Exit Requirements

Thesis Option- The student will work with their advisor to organize a committee of three faculty members to supervise, monitor and successfully defend their thesis (3 credit hours).

Non-Thesis Option- In the final semester all students will be required to take an American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)style Certified Clinical Exercise Specialists Exam. This exam will be taken from questions in the ACSM’s Certification Review book and from test bank questions provided with ACSM’s Resource Manual for Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription.
