The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders underwent renovations in 2003. Along with new walls, new carpeting, and new furniture, new technology was added to provide SECD students and faculty with state of the art equipment for diagnosis, therapy and research.
Two new therapy rooms were created in the first-floor Speech-Language clinic. These new rooms allow parents and students to observe clinic sessions through one-way windows. The third-floor audiology lab was included in the renovation project. Along with walls being built to separate a classroom space from the lab and conference spaces, the old hearing booth was removed, and the newer one refreshed with paint and carpeting. New computers and recording devices were added to the lab, which will allow students and faculty to complete state-of-the-art assessments of a variety of speech disorders and to engage in research. These renovations have provided some much-needed updating of both appearance and function of the clinic and lab.
Funding to provide continual upkeep of the space, technology enhancements and the latest equipment will be needed so that the program remains cutting edge. |
