The Department of Educational Leadership offers a program of study leading to the Master of Science in Education degree with a major in Instructional Technology and an emphasis as a Library Information Specialist.
Students who are interested only in the Library Information Specialist Endorsement may complete a 24 credit-hour sequence of courses that does not result in a degree but does qualify them to sit for the Illinois State Board of Education’s (ISBE’s) Library Information Specialist endorsement exam. The endorsement is issued by ISBE and permits a currently-certified classroom teacher to work as a school media specialist at the P-12 school level (elementary or secondary) for which she/he is certified.
TThe LIS emphasis will augment your personal knowledge of library information systems. This emphasis enables teachers and other school personnel to plan, implement, and evaluate media-based activities in P-12 library settings. If you pursue this option, you will become a knowledgeable designer of curriculum and instruction; those designs that you create will effectively utilize and integrate library resources to improve student learning.
Classroom teachers can use this program to better integrate technology and media-based resources into their classroom. Graduates of the program also will be well qualified to work as a librarian or media specialist in P-12 schools.
