Professional Experiences

Our students complete a 300 hour experience distributed across two distinctive courses for EDAD 554 (Practicum Course). They complete 150 hours in each course. Full-Time students will typically fulfill all the hours and part-time students must complete approximately 90 of the hours as they can apply some previous or current working positions towards the hourly requirement. Students are able to hold a practicum experience across over 15 offices, 20 programs, and 32 functional areas on-campus at SIUE. Additionally, students can hold a practicum experience at other 5-8 other neighboring institutions within the St. Louis Metropolitan Area.

Currently, the CSPA program has memorandums of understanding arrangements with:

Harris-Stowe State University Fontbonne University Lewis and Clark Community College
Southwest Illinois College

Ranken Technical

St. Louis Community College
Washington University in St. Louis Blackburn College Greenville University
Webster University University of Missouri- St. Louis

All of these colleges are within an approximate 30-40 minute drive to SIUE. The CSPA program offers placements across a diversity of institutional types including private, public, professional colleges, community colleges, and historically black college and universities (HBCU). Practicum experiences are limited to the spring and summer semesters. This allows for students to apply for national placements with (1) National Association for Orientation, Transition, and Retention (NODA); (2) Association of College Housing and University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I); or (3) National Association for Campus Activities (NACA). Additional individual partnerships exist with specific partners colleges through faculty professional networks that include international experiences or opportunities.

Graduate Assistantships

Students have access to over 30 assistantships at SIUE in Enrollment Management, the Division of Student Affairs, and Athletics. A special collaboration across campus provides preference to open positions for CSPA students, but are not guaranteed. A stipend and tuition waiver are provided. Most assistantships in Residence Life/Housing provide room and board. Additional off-campus opportunities exist at partner institutions.

Most off-campus graduate assistantships are available and offer a stipend and tuition waiver, and a select few offer housing. They provide for meaningful professional experiences. Others are coupled with a generous compensation package of housing, meal plan, and a stipend. Considering these options is a wonderful opportunity as it helps defray the cost of living associated with attending graduate school and provides professional experiences at nearby institutions. All partnering institutions are approximately 30 minutes from campus located in the heart of St. Louis.

The placement process begins typically each spring semester in March. Therefore, if you are interested in an assistantship, it is important to apply to be considered for admission before this date.
